Tamil Nadu: Temples, Heritage Cities and the Coromandel Coast
The oldest living culture in South India, seen along one road: Pallava monuments by the sea, a French quarter, the great Chola temples, the mansions of Chettinad and the temple city of Madurai. Private, chauffeur-driven, and best taken slowly.
Why Tamil Nadu
Why Tamil Nadu works so well for a private trip
Tamil Nadu is India’s great architectural state. Within a day’s drive of each other are the 7th-century rock-cut monuments of Mahabalipuram, the 11th-century Chola temples of Thanjavur and the Kaveri delta, and the temple city of Madurai, still the centre of daily worship as it has been for centuries. Between them lie a French colonial town on the coast and the quiet mansion villages of Chettinad.
For international visitors it is where Indian architecture, sculpture and living religion are most clearly seen together; for NRIs it is often the state of family roots. We plan it from Bengaluru with privately arranged chauffeur-driven vehicles and private guides where they add to a visit, as a Tamil Nadu-only route from Chennai to Madurai or joined to Kerala. Temples are living places of worship as well as monuments, and we plan visits with that respect.
At a glance
- Chennai is the international gateway; Madurai a useful regional airport for an open-jaw finish
- Three UNESCO World Heritage listings: Mahabalipuram, the Great Living Chola Temples and the Nilgiri Mountain Railway (part of the Mountain Railways of India)
- Most drives between stops take 2–4 hours on good roads
- Hot for much of the year: temple visits are planned for mornings and late afternoons
- Access and photography rules vary by temple and can change

Where to go in Tamil Nadu
Six regions in the order the road takes them from Chennai to Madurai, plus the Nilgiri hills in the west, each with its own page.
In the west of the state
The Nilgiri hills are not on the Chennai–Madurai road: they sit in Tamil Nadu’s west, between Mysuru and the Kerala coast. They are a two-night stop on Ghats to Coast, and can be added to other routes as a customised extension where the routing makes sense.
Kodaikanal, Rameswaram and Kanyakumari can be added to a custom route; ask us when you enquire.

Private car & driver
Getting around Tamil Nadu
Every trip uses your own chauffeur-driven vehicle with an English-speaking driver, from a sedan for two to a Tempo Traveller for a family group. Vehicles are booked by category, with the exact model or similar subject to availability. Roads between the main stops are good and distances moderate, so the pace is set by the heat and the temples rather than by the driving.
Chennai is the international gateway and the usual start. Madurai has a regional airport with domestic connections and some international services, which makes an open-jaw Chennai-to-Madurai route the natural shape; check current schedules for your dates. Hotels are optional: travel with vehicle and driver only, or let us include hotels by comfort level, location, budget and availability. Private guides are available on request at the major temple sites and are recommended for the Chola temples and Madurai; your chauffeur is not a guide.
Typical drive times
- Chennai to Mahabalipuram: approximately 1.5–2 hours
- Mahabalipuram to Pondicherry: approximately 2–2.5 hours
- Pondicherry to Thanjavur: approximately 4–5 hours with stops
- Thanjavur to Trichy: approximately 1.5 hours
- Trichy to Chettinad (Karaikudi): approximately 2 hours
- Chettinad to Madurai: approximately 2 hours
- Madurai to Thekkady (Kerala): approximately 4 hours
Times are approximate and depend on traffic, weather and stops.
Good for families, seniors and private groups
Tamil Nadu rewards a slower pace, and that suits travellers who want comfort over mileage:
- Families with older children, who can mix monuments, beaches and markets with time to rest
- Senior travellers, with two or three nights at most stops and temple visits in the cool hours
- Private groups of friends or relatives travelling together in one vehicle
- NRIs returning with family, who may want time in a particular town built into the route
Tell us about any mobility needs; temple complexes involve walking, footwear is removed, and some areas have steps.
