Overview

A city arranged around its temple

Madurai’s streets run in rings around the Meenakshi Amman temple, whose fourteen gateway towers, covered in painted sculpture, rise above the old city. The temple is one of the great living places of worship in India: thousands of people pass through it every day, the markets around it sell flowers, bangles and brass, and the city has been a centre of Tamil culture and learning for over two thousand years.

For a visitor it is the most vivid end to a Tamil Nadu journey, and the easiest to leave from: Madurai airport has domestic connections to Chennai, Bengaluru and other cities and some international services (check current schedules for your dates), and the road west leads to Thekkady and Kerala in about four hours. Two nights give a temple morning, a temple evening and a day in the city between them.

Why visit

Why visit Madurai

The temple as it is lived

Not a monument but a working city within a city, and the place to understand what Tamil temples are for.

The old city

Markets, tailors, flower sellers and the Nayak palace, all within walking distance of the temple walls.

The natural end of the road

An airport for the flight home, or the road to Kerala for those going on.

Key experiences

The essential Madurai

Two visits to the temple at different hours, and the city in between; a private guide is available on request and recommended.

Meenakshi Amman Temple

The towers, the Thousand-Pillar Hall and the temple tank, visited in the morning when the complex is calmest. Footwear is removed, modest dress is expected, photography is restricted and some inner areas are open to Hindus only; access and photography rules vary and can change.

The old city and the markets

The flower market, the Puthu Mandapam tailors’ hall, the brass and bangle streets around the temple, and a street-food evening for those who like it.

Tirumalai Nayak Palace

The 17th-century palace with its colonnaded courtyard. The Gandhi Memorial Museum, in the separate Tamukkam palace, displays the blood-stained cloth Gandhi wore when he was killed. Together they make a half-day away from the temple.

Also worth considering

  • The evening ceremony at the temple, in which the image of the deity is carried in procession; it can be seen from public areas on most evenings, timings vary and access is not guaranteed
  • Alagar Kovil and the Pazhamudircholai hill shrine, approximately 20 km north
  • A rooftop view of the temple towers at dusk from one of the old-city hotels
  • Rameswaram (approximately 3–4 hours) and Kanyakumari (approximately 4–5 hours), as onward stops on a custom route

Planning your visit

Planning your visit

When to go

December to February is the most comfortable; March to June is very hot, and temple visits are kept to early morning and evening. Festival periods, especially the Chithirai festival in April or May, are spectacular but extremely crowded.

How long to stay

Two nights: arrive, see the temple in the evening, the city and the palace the next day, and the temple again in the morning before departure. One night is possible for travellers flying out early.

Visiting the temple

Allow two hours with a guide. Footwear is left at the entrance, bags are checked, modest dress is expected, mobile phones are generally not allowed inside and cameras are restricted; some areas are open to Hindus only. Rules vary and can change.

How Madurai fits into a journey

Madurai is the final stop of the Tamil Nadu Temple Trail, reached from Chettinad (approximately 2 hours) or directly from Thanjavur and Trichy (approximately 3 hours). Fly out from here, or continue west to Thekkady in Kerala on a custom route. The short private trip Madurai, Thekkady, Munnar & Kochi does this in five nights, finishing at Kochi.

Private vehicle options

A sedan, an Innova Crysta or similar MPV, or a Tempo Traveller for groups. The old city is congested and the temple surroundings closed to most traffic; your chauffeur drops you at the nearest point and meets you on the far side.

For transport only, see car with driver.

Senior and family considerations

The temple is a large complex to walk barefoot, and the city is busy; the pace we set allows for both.

  • A morning temple visit avoids the heat and the evening crowds
  • Socks help on hot stone where they are allowed; rules differ by temple
  • The palace and museum are flat and easy; the markets can be done by car with short walks
  • A hotel outside the old city is quieter for seniors and young children
