Overview
A big city with an old heart
Chennai is large, hot and busy, and most visitors are passing through it on the way south. But it has a heart worth a half-day: the temple quarter of Mylapore, with its tank, flower market and the Kapaleeshwarar temple; the long sweep of the Marina; San Thome basilica by the shore; and Fort St George, where the East India Company began, with its museum of the colonial city.
Chennai International Airport has direct flights from the Gulf, Singapore, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Europe and across India. Your chauffeur meets you on arrival, and the first day can be as light as the flight requires, with the drive to Mahabalipuram the same afternoon or the next morning.

Why visit
Why start in Chennai
The natural gateway
Direct international flights, and the whole Tamil Nadu route unfolds southwards from here.
A real city, briefly
Half a day in Mylapore and the Fort gives the context for everything that follows: the living temple, the colonial trading post, the Tamil street.
Easy onward routing
Mahabalipuram is a short drive down the coast, Kanchipuram a detour inland, and both lead on to Pondicherry.
Key experiences
A half-day in Chennai
Enough to understand the city without spending a full day in traffic; we build it around your arrival time.
Also worth considering
- Kanchipuram, approximately 2 hours west: the temple city of the Pallavas and a silk-weaving centre, as a day trip or as the route to Mahabalipuram (adding about 2 hours)
- The DakshinaChitra heritage museum on the coast road, on the way to Mahabalipuram
- A South Indian breakfast or a filter coffee in Mylapore or T. Nagar
- The Theosophical Society gardens at Adyar, for a quiet hour
Planning your visit
Planning your Chennai stay
When to go
December to February is the most comfortable; the north-east monsoon brings heavy rain from October to early December, and April to June is very hot. The city is open year-round, but outdoor time is kept to mornings and evenings in the warm months.
How long to stay
One night on arrival is the usual pattern, with the half-day city before the drive south. Two nights suit overnight flights or anyone with family in the city. If the journey ends here, a final night near the airport is simplest.
Getting around
Chennai traffic is slow; the airport is south-west of the city and most hotels are 45 minutes to an hour away at busy times. The coast road south to Mahabalipuram begins on the city’s southern edge, so staying south of the centre shortens the next morning.
How Chennai fits into a Tamil Nadu journey
Chennai is the start of the Tamil Nadu Temple Trail, which goes first to Mahabalipuram and then down the coast to Pondicherry. Kanchipuram can be visited on the way. The route ends at Madurai, so there is no need to return. For a few days only, Mahabalipuram & Pondicherry from Chennai is a 4-night round trip down the coast.
Private vehicle options
A sedan or Innova Crysta or similar for couples and small families, a Tempo Traveller or Urbania for larger groups. Air-conditioned, allocated by category to the route and group size.
Airport meet-and-greet and transfers can be quoted on their own: see car with driver or airport transfers.

Senior and family considerations
Chennai is manageable for all ages if the first day is kept short and the heat respected.
- A late check-in and a slow first morning are better than a city tour straight off a night flight
- Mylapore involves a short walk in the lanes and footwear removal at the temple; the Marina and the Fort are easy
- Humidity is the main consideration; plan outings for early and late in the day
- Hotels near the airport or on the southern side of the city shorten the drive out
