Duration

Recommended 4 nights (2, 3 or 6 possible)

Route

Chennai → Chennai (6-night version ends at Trichy)

Pace

Two nights per stop; drives of 1.5–3.5 hours

Best months

December to February

Journey overview

Two coastal towns, one short road

Mahabalipuram and Pondicherry sit a couple of hours apart on the East Coast Road south of Chennai, and together make the most rewarding short trip in Tamil Nadu: the 7th- and 8th-century Pallava monuments by the sea, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the French and Tamil quarters of Pondicherry.

It works as the first or last few days of a longer India journey through Chennai, or as a short break on its own. Two nights at each stop keep the monuments for the cool hours and leave the middle of the day for the beach or the hotel.

Route summary

  1. Mahabalipuram — 2 nights by the sea
  2. Pondicherry — 2 nights in the French Quarter
  3. Back to Chennai airport

Chennai is the usual finish because it has the widest choice of international and domestic flights. The 6-night variation continues to Thanjavur and ends at Trichy airport instead.

Highlights

Mahabalipuram & Pondicherry highlights

The Pallava monuments

The Shore Temple, the Five Rathas and the great relief known as Arjuna’s Penance, best seen early and late in the day, with a private guide if you wish.

Pondicherry’s two quarters

The colonial streets and seafront promenade of the French Quarter, and the temples and markets of the Tamil quarter, both easily explored on foot.

Time by the sea

Both towns are on the coast: a beach afternoon at Mahabalipuram and an evening walk on Pondicherry’s promenade are part of the plan, not extras.

Day by day

Day by day: recommended 4-night plan

Drive times are approximate and depend on traffic and stops. Every day can be adjusted to your flights and pace.

Day 2 · Mahabalipuram

The monuments in the cool of the morning: the Shore Temple, the Five Rathas, Arjuna’s Penance and the cave temples, with a private guide if you wish. The afternoon at the beach or the hotel. Optional instead: a day inland to the temple city of Kanchipuram (approximately 1.5–2 hours each way).

Overnight: Mahabalipuram

Day 3 · Mahabalipuram to Pondicherry

Down the East Coast Road (approximately 2–2.5 hours). Check in, then a first walk through the French Quarter and along the promenade at sunset. See Pondicherry.

Day 4 · Pondicherry

The French and Tamil quarters on foot in the morning: the churches, the Aurobindo Ashram (silent, with set visiting hours) and the markets. In the afternoon, the Auroville visitor centre and the Matrimandir viewing point, or a rest.

Overnight: Pondicherry

Day 5 · Pondicherry to Chennai

Back up the coast to Chennai International Airport (approximately 3–3.5 hours) for your onward flight, or to a Chennai hotel if you are staying on. See Chennai.

Senior & family pacing

Travelling with seniors or young children

We can plan slower mornings, shorter driving days, fewer stops and an extra night where it helps. Tell us about any mobility needs when you enquire so we can suggest suitable stays and visits.

Two nights at each stop mean the sightseeing days have no long drives. The monuments involve uneven ground and some steps, so we plan visits for the cooler hours, keep them short where needed and arrange later starts where practical.
