Overview
A gracious city with a royal past
Mysuru, still widely known as Mysore, was the seat of the Wadiyar kings, and its palace, broad avenues and busy markets still carry that history. It is calmer than Bengaluru and rewards an unhurried pace.
A Mysore private tour usually spends a full day in the city, with Srirangapatna on the way in from Bengaluru and Chamundi Hill above town. Most guests then continue to the forests of Kabini, the hills of Coorg or the Nilgiris.

Also worth considering
- St Philomena’s Church, a striking neo-Gothic church near the city centre
- Devaraja Market, for flowers, fruit and spices
- Brindavan Gardens below the Krishnarajasagar dam, best in the evening when the fountains run (timings vary)
- Somanathapura, approximately 35 km east of the city: the Keshava temple is one of the three UNESCO-listed Hoysala temples and makes an easy half-day, or a stop on the drive from Bengaluru

When to go
October to March is the most comfortable time, with dry, pleasant days. April and May are hot, and the monsoon months bring rain but fewer visitors. The Dasara festival, usually in September or October, is spectacular but busy, so plan well ahead.
How long to stay
One night covers the highlights. Two nights allow a slower pace, time at Srirangapatna and a relaxed evening in the city.
How Mysuru fits into a South India journey
Mysuru is usually the first stop after Bengaluru. From here, routes continue to Kabini and Nagarhole for wildlife, to Coorg for coffee country, or south into the Nilgiri hills and on to Kerala. Heritage-minded travellers continue west to Chikkamagaluru and the Hoysala temples and on to Hampi on the Deccan Heritage route. For a short trip, Mysuru & Coorg from Bengaluru spends two nights here and two in the coffee hills.

Senior and family considerations
Mysuru is one of the easier stops for older travellers and young children: distances in the city are short and days can be kept relaxed.
- Mysuru Palace involves a fair amount of walking and some steps, and footwear is removed before entering
- Chamundi Hill can be reached by car, so the long flight of steps is optional
- Visiting the palace early avoids the midday heat and the biggest crowds
- Dasara dates are busy; quieter dates suit travellers who prefer a gentle pace
