Overview

Coffee country, not a checklist

A Coorg private tour is less about ticking off sights and more about slowing down. Kodagu, as the district is properly called, is a region of coffee and pepper estates, forested hills and small towns, with Madikeri at its centre.

Many guests stay on or near a plantation outside town, spend a morning walking through the estates, see a waterfall and watch the sunset from Raja’s Seat. The rest of the time is for rest, good food and fresh air.

When to go

Coorg can be visited through much of the year, with different conditions in the dry, summer and monsoon seasons. The drier months usually bring clear, comfortable days, and the coffee harvest begins towards the end of the year. The monsoon, roughly June to September, is very wet but lush, and some walks and viewpoints can be affected.

How long to stay

Two nights is the usual minimum, giving one full day for estate walks and sightseeing. Three nights suit travellers who simply want to rest.

How Coorg combines with other destinations

Coorg usually follows Mysuru or Kabini and Nagarhole on a Karnataka route. From here, journeys continue north to Chikkamagaluru and the Hoysala temples and Hampi, or south into Wayanad and on through Kerala. For a short trip, Mysuru & Coorg from Bengaluru spends two nights in Mysuru and two here.

Private vehicle options

Hill roads in Coorg are narrow and winding, so we suggest a vehicle that suits both your group and the roads. Vehicles are booked by category, with the exact model or similar subject to availability.

Coorg suits older travellers and families well, as long as stays and walks are chosen with care.

  • Some estate walks and the path to Abbey Falls involve slopes and steps; gentler options are easy to arrange
  • Hill roads have many bends, so we plan regular stops
  • Plantation stays can be some way from town; tell us if you prefer to be closer to Madikeri
  • Evenings can be cool, so pack a light layer
