Journey overview

The south in one unhurried sweep

This is our long-format journey for travellers with three weeks who want depth rather than speed. It follows the shape of the peninsula: south along the Coromandel coast through Mahabalipuram and Pondicherry, inland to the Chola temples of Thanjavur and the temple city of Madurai, west over the Ghats into Kerala at Thekkady, down to the backwaters and Fort Kochi, then north through the green hills of Wayanad into Karnataka for the Kabini forest and the palaces of Mysuru, ending at Bengaluru’s international airport.

It is not a list of every famous name. Munnar, Hampi, Coorg and Chettinad are left out of the recommended version so that each stop gets two nights and no drive is wasted; any of them can be added. The route north from Kochi goes through Wayanad because it is the most direct road from Kerala into the Karnataka forests, contiguous with Nagarhole; the alternative, via Coimbatore and the Nilgiris, is longer and steeper. The Kochi to Wayanad day is the one long drive of the journey, and we plan it as a transfer day.

Route summary

  1. Arrive Chennai, transfer to Mahabalipuram — 2 nights
  2. Pondicherry — 2 nights
  3. Thanjavur — 2 nights
  4. Madurai — 2 nights
  5. Thekkady — 2 nights
  6. Kumarakom — 1 night, then an Alleppey houseboat or second resort night — 1 night
  7. Kochi — 2 nights
  8. Wayanad — 2 nights
  9. Kabini — 2 nights
  10. Mysuru — 2 nights
  11. Bengaluru — 1 night, then depart

A 19-night version omits Kabini (Wayanad to Mysuru directly). Up to 25 nights adds Munnar between Thekkady and the backwaters and Coorg between Kabini and Mysuru. The route also runs in reverse, from Bengaluru to Chennai.

Who it suits

Who this journey suits

For travellers with three weeks or more who want to understand South India as a whole, not in a fortnight’s sample. It is a long journey, and not the right choice for a first short trip.

  • First-time international visitors with three weeks or more
  • Long-haul travellers who want one well-planned trip rather than several short ones
  • Couples who like a steady rhythm of two nights in each place
  • Families with older children who travel well over longer periods
  • NRIs travelling with family across the states of their roots
  • Private groups travelling together in one coordinated journey
  • Seniors who are comfortable with a three-week trip at a measured pace

FAQ

Questions about Grand South India

The recommended version is 21 nights. Nineteen is possible without Kabini; for two weeks, Temples and Backwaters (Chennai to Kochi, 14 nights) is the better choice.

The route follows the peninsula from east to west and back north, so arriving at Chennai and leaving from Bengaluru avoids any backtracking. Both airports have international flights, and the route also runs in reverse.

It is the most direct road from Kochi into the Karnataka forests, and Wayanad’s hills are contiguous with Nagarhole and Kabini. The alternative via Coimbatore and the Nilgiris is longer, with steep ghat sections. The Kochi to Wayanad day is long (approximately 6–7 hours), so we plan it as a transfer day followed by a rest day.

To keep two nights at each stop without making the journey longer than three weeks. Munnar and Coorg can be added (up to 25 nights); Hampi sits far to the north and is better on its own Deccan Heritage journey.

We plan the whole journey centrally from Bengaluru and remain your single point of contact. Vehicles, drivers and local services are arranged by us or, where a leg is better served locally, through vetted partners we coordinate. We aim to keep the same vehicle and driver throughout where operationally appropriate; your quotation states the arrangements.

Hotels are optional: vehicle and driver only is always possible, or we include hotels by comfort level, location, budget and availability. Private guides are available on request at the major temples and heritage sites; your chauffeur is not a guide.

For seniors comfortable with a three-week trip, yes: two nights per stop, cool-hour sightseeing and a rest day after the long drive. Tell us about mobility needs before confirmation.

Pricing depends on route, vehicle category, dates and travel requirements. Your quotation will clearly state the vehicle, route, duration, inclusions and any applicable extra charges.
