Overview

A port city with five centuries of visitors

Kochi has traded with Arabia, China and Europe for centuries, and Fort Kochi and Mattancherry still show it: Portuguese and Dutch churches, a 16th-century synagogue, spice warehouses, Chinese fishing nets on the shore and streets of old merchant houses now turned into cafés and galleries. It is a city to walk slowly, early in the morning or late in the afternoon.

Cochin International Airport is the main entry point for Kerala, with direct flights from the Gulf, Singapore and across India, so most private Kerala journeys begin here. Your chauffeur meets you on arrival and the first day can be as light as the flight requires. Many routes also return to Kochi at the end, after the backwaters or Marari beach.

Why visit

Why start in Kochi

The natural gateway

Direct international flights, and Munnar, the backwaters and the coast all within a few hours by road.

History you can walk

Fort Kochi is compact, flat and best on foot, with the car waiting where the lanes end.

A gentle first stop

Good hotels in every category, from heritage houses in Fort Kochi to business hotels near the airport, and a city day that can be kept short after a long flight.

Key experiences

Kochi in a day

A private half-day covers the heritage quarter; the rest is for the waterfront, a café or an evening performance.

Fort Kochi

The Chinese fishing nets, St Francis Church, the Santa Cruz basilica and the Dutch-era lanes, walked in the cooler hours with a private guide if you wish.

Mattancherry and Jew Town

The Paradesi Synagogue, the Dutch Palace with its murals and the spice warehouses of the old trading quarter; opening days and hours vary and some sites close on religious days.

Evening on the water

Sunset by the harbour, a ferry across to Vypeen or Ernakulam, or a Kathakali performance at one of the cultural centres, subject to the day’s programme.

Also worth considering

  • The Kerala Folklore Museum at Thevara, for those interested in the performing arts
  • Marine Drive and the modern city of Ernakulam, across the water
  • Cherai beach on Vypeen island, approximately an hour away, for a quiet afternoon
  • Athirapally falls, approximately 2 hours north-east, as a long half-day or on the way to Munnar by a slower road

Planning your visit

Planning your Kochi stay

When to go

December to February is the driest and most comfortable. March to May is hot and humid on the coast. The south-west monsoon brings heavy rain from June to September, and October and November see post-monsoon showers; Kochi is open year-round, but plan walking for mornings and evenings in the warm months.

How long to stay

One night on arrival is the usual pattern; two nights give a full heritage day before the hill road. If the journey ends here, a final night in Fort Kochi is a pleasant way to finish before an onward flight.

Getting around

Fort Kochi and Mattancherry are 10–15 minutes apart by car; the airport is north of the city and the drive takes 1 to 1.5 hours depending on traffic. We plan arrival and departure transfers around your flight times.

How Kochi fits into a Kerala journey

Kochi is the start of Kerala Classic, which climbs to Munnar first, and the finish of Ghats to Coast and Coffee, Hills and Backwaters, which arrive from Karnataka and end on the backwaters or at Marari beach. Two short private trips also use Kochi: Munnar, Thekkady & Kerala Backwaters starts and ends here, and Madurai, Thekkady, Munnar & Kochi finishes here from Tamil Nadu.

Private vehicle options

A sedan or Innova Crysta or similar for couples and small families, a Tempo Traveller for larger groups. Fort Kochi’s lanes are narrow, so your chauffeur drops you at the edge of the quarter and meets you on the far side.

Airport meet-and-greet and transfers can be quoted on their own: see car with driver or airport transfers.

Senior and family considerations

Kochi is one of the easiest Indian cities for older travellers and children: short distances, flat streets and plenty of places to pause.

  • A late check-in and a slow first morning are better than sightseeing straight off a night flight
  • The heritage quarter can be seen in two short walks with the car between them
  • Humidity is the main consideration; plan the walk early and the afternoon by the pool
  • Hotels near the airport suit very late arrivals or early onward flights

Questions

Kochi: your questions

One night is worthwhile even on a short trip; two if you want to see the heritage quarter properly. Driving straight to Munnar after an international flight makes a long first day on a hill road, which we do not recommend.

Approximately 40 km; the drive takes 1 to 1.5 hours depending on traffic. We allow for it when we plan your transfers.

Several cultural centres stage evening performances. We can arrange tickets subject to the day’s programme; performances and timings are not guaranteed.

Not essential, but a private guide adds a great deal to Mattancherry and the synagogue. Guides are available on request and are not included unless stated in your quotation.

Yes. Alleppey and Marari are 1.5 to 2 hours from Kochi airport, so a final night on the coast and a morning transfer works well. Alternatively, the journey can finish on the southern coast and fly out of Thiruvananthapuram.
