Overview
Coffee hills and carved stone
Chikkamagaluru, often spelled Chikmagalur, is where coffee was first planted in India, and estates still cover the hills around the town. Stays here are about the plantation atmosphere: estate bungalows, misty mornings, scenic drives up to the Baba Budangiri range and Mullayanagiri, Karnataka’s highest point.
An hour below the hills lie Belur and Halebidu, the 12th-century temples of the Hoysala dynasty, inscribed by UNESCO in 2023 as the Sacred Ensembles of the Hoysalas together with Somanathapura near Mysuru. Visiting the temples from a coffee-estate base makes a better two days than rushing them from the highway.

Hill roads, coffee and pepper estates, viewpoints and waterfalls, all reachable by car from one base.
Key experiences
The region in two days
One day for the temples, one for the hills, with time to sit still in between.
Also worth considering
- Shravanabelagola, with the monolithic Gommateshwara statue, on the road from Bengaluru or Mysuru (more than 600 steps; ask us about assistance)
- Hassan, a practical overnight alternative close to the temples for travellers who prefer a town hotel
- Kudremukh and the Bhadra wildlife sanctuary for those with an extra day

When to go
October to February is cool and clear. March to May is warmer but fine for the temples. The monsoon from June to September turns the hills green and the roads slow.
How long to stay
Two nights lets you see Belur and Halebidu on one day and the hills on another. One night works as a stopover between Mysuru and Hampi, with the temples on the way.
Seeing the temples well
The temples are open through the day; mornings are cooler. Footwear is removed at both. A private guide is available on request and makes a real difference to Hoysala sculpture.
How it fits into a journey
Chikkamagaluru sits between Mysuru or Coorg (approximately 4–5 hours from either) and Hampi (approximately 6–7 hours, one transfer day). It is the Hoysala stop on Karnataka Classic and Deccan Heritage, and the coffee-country start of Coffee, Hills and Backwaters.
Private vehicle options
Hill roads and estate tracks suit a sedan or an Innova Crysta or similar; larger groups travel by Tempo Traveller. Your chauffeur handles the temple parking and the estate approach roads.
Transport-only travel is possible: see car with driver.

Journeys through Chikkamagaluru
The Hoysala temples feature in four of our Karnataka journeys:
Senior and family considerations
The temples are flat and easy to walk; the hills are about the drive, not the climb.
- Both temples are reached by a short walk from the car park; footwear is removed and the stone can be hot by midday
- Estate stays suit families: space, quiet and simple home-cooked food
- Shravanabelagola’s steps are steep; it can be skipped or done with a carried chair
- The drive to Hampi is long, so we keep that day free of sightseeing
We adjust the order of the two days to how you feel on arrival.
