Journey overview

Fourteen centuries of architecture on one road

Tamil Nadu’s temples are the most complete record of South Indian architecture anywhere, and this journey follows it in order: the 7th-century Pallava monuments carved from the rock at Mahabalipuram, the 11th- and 12th-century Chola temples of the Kaveri delta, and the Meenakshi temple of Madurai, rebuilt by the Nayaks in the 17th century and alive with worship every hour of the day. Between them come the French streets of Pondicherry and the merchant mansions of Chettinad, which make this a journey through Tamil culture rather than a temple checklist.

It is planned for travellers who come for architecture, history and living tradition, not only for pilgrims. Temples here are places of worship first: we visit them at the quiet hours, with private guides who explain the sequence and the etiquette, and we plan one major site a day with the afternoons free. The route runs south from Chennai and ends at Madurai, which has its own airport, so there is no return drive.

Route summary

  1. Chennai — 1 night
  2. Mahabalipuram — 2 nights
  3. Pondicherry — 2 nights
  4. Thanjavur, with Darasuram, Gangaikonda Cholapuram and Trichy — 3 nights
  5. Chettinad — 2 nights
  6. Madurai — 2 nights, then fly out or continue to Kerala

A 10-night version gives Thanjavur two nights (with the delta temples seen on the way in) and Chettinad one. Kanchipuram can be added between Chennai and Mahabalipuram; Rameswaram or Kanyakumari after Madurai.

Senior & family pacing

Travelling with seniors or young children

We can plan slower mornings, shorter driving days, fewer stops and an extra night where it helps. Tell us about any mobility needs when you enquire so we can suggest suitable stays and visits.

One major temple a day, visited at opening time or in the evening, never straight after a long drive. The longest transfers (Pondicherry to Thanjavur, Thanjavur to Chettinad) each carry one site, broken by lunch. Temple visits mean walking barefoot on stone and some steps; the Rockfort and lighthouse climbs are optional, and three nights at Thanjavur allow a rest day.

Inclusions & exclusions

What your quotation covers

Inclusions and exclusions are confirmed in your quotation based on the selected route, vehicle, hotel option and travel plan.

Your quotation sets out:

  • The vehicle category and driver arrangements
  • Whether hotels are included and, if so, their comfort level and locations
  • Your day-by-day route and timings
  • Any guides, entry tickets or activities you ask us to arrange

Pricing & payment

Pricing depends on route, vehicle category, dates and travel requirements, so every booking starts with a tailored quote. A booking is confirmed once the required advance payment is received and South Zone Holidays issues confirmation in accordance with the agreed quotation and service availability. The advance amount and balance terms are stated on your quotation. We accept international credit and debit cards, bank transfer and UPI.

5% GST applicable. GST invoice available.
