Journey overview

Two full days among the ruins

Hampi, the capital of the Vijayanagara empire and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is too large and too far from Bengaluru for a day trip. Approximately 6–7 hours away by road, it needs at least two nights to see properly, and three nights give you two full days among the temples, the royal centre and the boulder landscape along the Tungabhadra river.

This short trip goes to Hampi and back, and nothing more. For Hampi as part of a longer Karnataka journey with Mysuru, the Hoysala temples and the cave temples of Badami, see Deccan Heritage.

Route summary

  1. Bengaluru to Hampi — a dedicated travel day

Jindal Vijayanagar airport, approximately 40–60 minutes from Hampi depending on your hotel’s location, has scheduled regional flights; check the current schedule for your travel dates. Hubballi airport is approximately 3.5 hours away.

Highlights

Hampi highlights

The royal and sacred centres

The Royal Enclosure, the Lotus Mahal, the Elephant Stables, the Vittala temple and its stone chariot, and the Virupaksha temple, which is still in daily worship.

The river and the boulders

The Tungabhadra and the boulder landscape around it, with a sunrise or sunset viewpoint if you wish. Coracle rides depend on water levels and local operating conditions.

A heat-aware pace

Sites in the early morning and late afternoon, the hot hours at the hotel, and a private guide if you wish.

Day by day

Day by day: recommended 3-night plan

Drive times are approximate and depend on traffic and stops. Every day can be adjusted to your flights and pace.

Day 1 · Bengaluru to Hampi

The long day of the trip: approximately 330 km and 6–7 hours with a lunch stop. An early start, no sightseeing on arrival and a quiet evening at the hotel. See Hampi.

Overnight: Hampi

Day 2 · Hampi: the royal centre

The Royal Enclosure, the Lotus Mahal, the Elephant Stables and the Hazara Rama temple in the cool of the morning, with a private guide if you wish. The hot hours at the hotel, then the Virupaksha temple and sunset from Hemakuta hill.

Overnight: Hampi

Day 3 · Hampi: the Vittala temple and the river

The Vittala temple and the riverside path in the morning. The afternoon free, or a coracle ride on the Tungabhadra where water levels and local operating conditions allow.

Overnight: Hampi

Day 4 · Hampi to Bengaluru

Leave after breakfast for the drive back (approximately 6–7 hours), with no sightseeing planned. Or, where a scheduled regional flight from Jindal Vijayanagar airport fits your dates, fly back instead.

End of journey

Duration options

Shorter or longer versions

The recommended plan is 3 nights. A 2-night version works only with a flight; a 4-night version slows the pace.

2 nights

Only with a flight

Fly one way between Bengaluru and Jindal Vijayanagar airport where a scheduled regional flight fits your dates, and drive the other way. Without a suitable flight, two nights means two long drives and only one day at Hampi, which we do not recommend.

4 nights

Slower, or one more heritage stop

A third full day at Hampi: the outlying temples at an easier pace and longer breaks in the hot hours, or a day trip to the Chalukyan temples at Lakkundi (approximately 2 hours each way).

Choose a vehicle for your group

Every journey is private, with your own chauffeur-driven vehicle throughout. We suggest a category based on the size of your party and how much you are carrying.

Make it yours

Flexibility and customisation

Use this plan as a starting point. Common changes include:

  • Flying one way via Jindal Vijayanagar where a scheduled flight fits your dates
  • A first or last night in Bengaluru, near the airport if that suits your flights
  • Adding or removing nights at any stop
  • Swapping a stop for one that better suits your interests
  • Adding airport transfers at either end of your trip
  • Continuing to other parts of India, with ground services arranged through vetted partners

Private guides can be arranged for selected heritage, cultural and city visits.

Senior & family pacing

Travelling with seniors or young children

We can plan slower mornings, shorter driving days, fewer stops and an extra night where it helps. Tell us about any mobility needs when you enquire so we can suggest suitable stays and visits.

The two drives are long, so we break them with stops and plan nothing else on those days. At Hampi, sites are visited in half-days with the hot hours at the hotel; hill viewpoints and temple steps are optional, and much of the ground is uneven.

Inclusions & exclusions

What your quotation covers

Inclusions and exclusions are confirmed in your quotation based on the selected route, vehicle, hotel option and travel plan.

Your quotation sets out:

  • The vehicle category and driver arrangements
  • Whether hotels are included and, if so, their comfort level and locations
  • Your day-by-day route and timings
  • Any guides, entry tickets or activities you ask us to arrange

Pricing & payment

Pricing depends on route, vehicle category, dates and travel requirements, so every booking starts with a tailored quote. A booking is confirmed once the required advance payment is received and South Zone Holidays issues confirmation in accordance with the agreed quotation and service availability. The advance amount and balance terms are stated on your quotation. We accept international credit and debit cards, bank transfer and UPI.

5% GST applicable. GST invoice available.

FAQ

Questions about Hampi

Not sensibly. Hampi is approximately 6–7 hours each way by road, so a same-day return leaves almost no time at the site. Three nights, with two full days, is what we recommend.

Jindal Vijayanagar airport, approximately 40–60 minutes from Hampi depending on your hotel’s location, has scheduled regional flights; check the current schedule for your travel dates. Hubballi airport, approximately 3.5 hours away, is the alternative. Your vehicle can be arranged to meet you at either.

October to February, when days are warm rather than hot. From March to May it is very hot, and we plan sightseeing for early mornings and late afternoons only.

Deccan Heritage is a 10-night journey from Bengaluru through Mysuru, the Hoysala temples, Hampi and Badami, ending at Hubballi. This short trip goes to Hampi and back. For Hampi at the end of a longer Karnataka trip, see Karnataka Classic.

We suggest one for at least the first day, because the site is large and its history is complex. Your chauffeur is not a guide, but a private guide can be arranged.
