Overview

Where South Indian temple architecture was worked out

Between the 6th and 8th centuries the Chalukya kings ruled from Badami, and in three places a few kilometres apart their builders tried out the forms that later temples across the south would follow. Badami has four cave temples cut into a sandstone cliff above Agastya lake; Aihole has dozens of early temples scattered through a village; Pattadakal, the coronation site, has the mature result, a group of nine temples and a Jain sanctuary inscribed by UNESCO in 1987.

Travellers visit the three as one circuit from a base in Badami, usually over a day and a half. It is quieter than Hampi, the sites are compact and the sandstone glows in the late afternoon.

Why visit

Why visit the Chalukyan circuit

The origins of the style

See northern and southern temple forms side by side at Pattadakal, and their first drafts at Aihole.

Badami’s setting

Cave temples in a red cliff, a green lake below and the Bhutanatha temples on the far shore: one of Karnataka’s finest views.

The natural pair with Hampi

Three to four hours from Hampi, so the two great heritage landscapes of the Deccan can be seen in one journey.

Key experiences

The three sites

Compact, close together and best taken slowly: caves in the morning, Pattadakal and Aihole after lunch, or across a second morning.

Badami cave temples

Four caves carved in the 6th and 7th centuries, three Hindu and one Jain, reached by steps up the cliff with views over Agastya lake and the Bhutanatha temples.

Pattadakal

The Group of Monuments at Pattadakal: nine temples including the Virupaksha temple, built around 740 to mark a Chalukyan victory, and a masterpiece of the group.

Aihole

A village built among early temples: the Durga temple with its apsidal plan, the Lad Khan temple and hill shrines reached by a short climb.

Also worth considering

  • The Bhutanatha temples across Agastya lake at sunset
  • Mahakuta, a shaded temple tank between Badami and Pattadakal
  • Lakkundi and Gadag, a detour of Chalukyan-period temples on the road from Hampi

Planning your visit

When to go

October to February is comfortable. Summers are hot; as at Hampi, sightseeing is kept to mornings and late afternoons. Monsoon visits are possible and quiet.

How long to stay

Two nights in Badami give a full circuit without rushing and a sunset by the lake. One night works for travellers passing from Hampi to Goa.

Walking and steps

The Badami caves are reached by a flight of steps (with resting points); Aihole’s hill shrines are optional. Pattadakal is flat and easy.

How it fits into a journey

This is not a quick side trip from Bengaluru: Badami is approximately 8 hours from the city by road. It belongs with Hampi on the Deccan Heritage route, with the journey ending at Hubballi airport (approximately 2–2.5 hours), with Goa (approximately 6–7 hours) as an optional onward extension. It can also be added to Karnataka Classic as a two-night extension.

Private vehicle options

Roads between the three sites are narrow village roads: a sedan, an Innova Crysta or similar MPV, or a Tempo Traveller for groups. Your chauffeur plans the order of the sites around the light and the heat.

Transport-only travel is possible: see car with driver.

Senior and family considerations

Pattadakal and most of Aihole are easy; the Badami caves need a steady climb.

  • The cave steps are broad with places to pause; take them early in the day
  • Pattadakal is flat, shaded in parts and close to the car
  • Monkeys at Badami take food from hands; keep snacks packed away
  • Two nights keep each outing short and leave the hot hours free

Tell us about mobility and we will plan the caves, or skip them, accordingly.
